I meet with a ton of high school and college athletes -- and I have to say, excuse-making is crushing your confidence and success.
You are better than the excuses you make.
When you make an excuse you are giving up the amazing opportunity you have to take responsibility and ownership so that you can actually grow and get better.
Examples:
- “I am not starting because the coach _______.”
- “I haven’t been working out or running because I’ve been too busy with __________.”
- “I haven’t been scoring as much because I was sick, then this happened, then that happened.”
- “My grades are slipping because I have trouble focusing and I’ve just had a lot to do.”
A valid excuse is still an excuse, and it will not help you in the long run.
Today, make a decision to replace all excuses with solution seeking questions.
The moment you are tempted to make an excuse, instead ask a better question:
“What can I control? What can I do? How can I solve this? Who do I need to ask for help?”
You are literally one shift away from greater success.
That’s taking responsibility. That’s taking ownership!
