What you feed, grows. What you starve, dies.
Athlete, for your benefit, I'm going to be direct and to the point today.
What You Feed, Grows Example:
Have you been underperforming in games, feeling tight, making errors?
When someone asks you, "How's softball going?" is your first response, "I've been playing poorly, I'm just so tense?"
If that's your first thought and response, then that is what you are feeding.
The solution is to focus on the solution.
Question: "How's softball going?"
Answer: "Making progress! I'm focused on playing looser and freer so I can make the plays I know I can make."
Is this too "Positive and Pollyanna" for you?
Fine, keep talking about and focusing on your problems and see where that gets you.
What you Starve, Dies Example:
Do you really, deep down believe and desire to be a starter? Or a leading scorer? Or let's say, achieve a college scholarship?
When is the last time you have told your coach that you want that?
When is the last time you have told your friends or teammates about this big dream?
How often do you talk about it?
When you starve the dream, and the dream dies.
On the flip side, if you starve your self-doubts, those also die. Don't give them room in your conversations. Don't give them room in your mind. Talk about them quickly, journal about them to get them out of your mind, and then replace them with what you want to grow- a laser-like focus on your goals and dreams.
Dedicated to your success in sports and life,
Coach Andrew J Simpson
